Alpine County
Alpine County sits in the Sierra Nevada between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park. The county covers 743 square miles, and the county seat is Markleeville. Large portions of the county lie within the Eldorado, Stanislaus, and Toiyabe National Forests. The major highways are State Routes 4, 88, and 89. The county is divided geographically by the Sierra Nevada crest, and Highway 4 over Ebbetts Pass is closed during the winter months. Alpine County has the smallest population of any county in California.
The eastern side of the county, along the Highway 4 corridor, is home to the Bear Valley ski resort. Ground ambulance service in this part of the county is provided, in a non-exclusive operating area, by Ebbetts Pass Fire District. Ill or injured patients are primarily transported to Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas.
The western side of the county, along the Highway 88 corridor, is home to the Kirkwood ski resort. Ground ambulance service in this area is provided, in a non-exclusive operating area, by Lake Valley Fire Protection District. Patients are primarily transported to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe or Carson Valley Medical Center in Gardnerville, Nevada.
